Mums give guards gifts

COLDSTREAM Guards had the honour of playing postmen this week when they picked up hundreds of 'creature comforts' for troops abroad.

Brian Ridley and Ken Pearson stopped off at the parish rooms in Cawthorne on Tuesday at the request of the Mothers' Union.

The society launched an appeal in April asking for items to be put in the packages destined for Coldstream Guards in Afghanistan.

Cynthia Hindley, a member of Cawthorne MU who headed the appeal, said she is thrilled with the outcome.

She said: "We've had a brilliant response from people as you can see and no doubt these parcels will put a smile on troops' faces when they open them up."
