Rona came next to last but still a winner

RONA Hurst came next to the last in a big race - but still felt like a winner.

She has cerebral palsy and until 18 months ago walking was "like standing on glass."

Then she had an operation and she has improved enough to compete with hundreds of competitors in the three mile Race for Life event in Sheffield, using a walking frame and finishing in one and a half hours.

Mum Maureen said:"She came next to the last but was given a round of applause and thought it was marvellous."

Rona, 41, of Monk Bretton, has been determined to overcome her problems since she was a baby. With the help of carers, she has lived on her own for 14 years.

She works as a clerk at Mount Vernon Hospital and has been driving since she was 19, now using an automatic car which has been adapted for her.

Maureen said:" She is a very determined lady and lives a life as near normal as possible. There's lots she cannot do, but I am very proud of her."

Rona is expected to raise nearly £400 for cancer research, thanks to her efforts in the Sheffield walk.
