Brave Jason vows he'll walk again

A TEENAGER who broke his back in two places when his scooter collided with a car vowed he is determined to walk again.

Brave Jason Kirby, 18, suffered a fractured skull, punctured lung and needed stitches on his tongue, lips and face.

He had been riding his silver Speedflight scooter along West Street, Hoyland, when it collided with a Peugeot 206 as it turned into Valley Way.

He was airlifted to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital and spent nearly a week in intensive care before being transferred to the spinal injuries unit on Wednesday.

Speaking from his hospital bed yesterday, Jason of Birdwell Common, said he was happy to be alive.

"It is 50-50 at the moment whether I walk, I have lost all feeling in my legs," he said.

"When they told me that I got very upset but now I am determined to get better and I am keeping a strong mind."

The former Kirk Balk pupil will undergo an operation on his spine next week and will have to lie flat on his back for a month before trying a wheelchair. His bike has been written off and the keen footballer said he would never get another.

Girlfriend Jade Barker,16, has visited Jason every day since the accident and pledged to help him make a full recovery.
