Removal company in bridge dispute

A REMOVAL company is continuing with legal action against the council after one of its lorries became stuck under a Penistone bridge.

Yet the council's highways department says the height markings are correct.

A Specialised Movers van had its roof and sides ripped off in the incident on November 5 when it became stuck under the bridge on Sheffield Road, Springvale.

Council staff were sent to check the height markings after the Sheffield based company said it was taking legal action because, it says, the height of the lorry was 13ft 10in and the bridge is marked at 14ft 9in.

A spokesman for the council said: "A site inspection has been carried out to note any damage that the council or Network Rail may seek to recover; there has been no requirement to check the bridge height or signage following this incident. It was reviewed earlier this year and the information shown at the bridge is correct.

Local councillors have made renewed calls for better signage at the bridge including metric measurements for European drivers.
