full story in this week's chronicle Barnsley to 'boom in credit crisis'By ADAM CIVICO BARNSLEY should expect to benefit from the financial downturn that is crippling the country, an experienced commercial property expert has told the Chronicle.
The economy is spiralling into a depression and unemployment this week hit an 11-year high but Guy Gilfillan said there is reason for Barnsley to be optimistic.
He says as the credit crunch bites and companies look to cut costs he says many based in the south east will look to move from their traditional but expensive bases and move north where it is cheaper.
Regeneration of the town centre and new office and industrial developments like Gateway Plaza, Town End, and Capitol Business Park, Dodworth, make Barnsley an attractive proposition.
He said: "It is a trend we have seen before although there is a difference this time. During the last full economic downturn in the early-1990s Leeds and to a lesser extent Sheffield benefited from relocations.
"At that time Barnsley did not have any offices to offer so was not on the radar. Now we're seeing the potential for relocation filter down and Barnsley is attractive. It has suddenly got decent modern office space, that is really the difference."
He is aware of several big companies considering a move here. |
