Goods are delivered by barrows

DAYTIME deliveries of goods to town centre shops and businesses should be made on foot either carrying or wheeling goods in barrows.

That is the advice given in a newsletter issued to all traders in light of new restrictions banning all traffic, including delivery vehicles, from the pedestrian zones between 9.30am and 4.30pm.

One delivery firm spokesman said using barrows to deliver to Greggs was far from ideal: "It turns a ten minute call into a 30 minute call and that's assuming we can get parked in the delivery area. It means we're pushing wheelbarrows around the high street."

Clive Watkinson, a spokesman for the Chamber of Commerce, said: "There are probably going to be some teething troubles and people not realising they are breaking the rules. "We support the idea behind it."
