Flash of Tate fame for John

A PENISTONE photographer is to have one of his snaps displayed in the Tate Modern in London after winning a place in a slide show on the history of urban photography.

John Marshall, who owns Light and Dark Photography, will have a picture of a scene in Penistone market displayed at the famous gallery in an exhibition called Street and Studio.

The exhibition, which features many famous photographers, looks at the contrast between pictures taken in the carefully orchestrated studio and images captured in the street.

Members of the public were asked to submit their pictures and John's is one of a hundred that made it into the slide show from more than 3,500 entries judged by a panel including Juergen Teller.

John said: "The market has such history and I spent about a month just going down there taking pictures of the real salt of the earth people who work and shop there. "It's a real feather in the cap to be recognised for your work in this genre. I'm very proud although I won't actually get chance to see it because it is only on for a month."

Street and Studio is an exhibition of international photography ranging from early black and white pictures from the late 1800s to contemporary fashion photography.

All the pictures in the show are to be published in a book by the gallery about the history of urban photography early next year.

John is also looking for galleries around Barnsley and Sheffield to display his pictures of life in Penistone.
