Flood-hit residents get meeting

FLOOD-HIT residents in Darton and Wombwell who petitioned the council for better defences to be put in place have been granted a meeting at the town hall.

Present will be Barnsley council officers, representatives from the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water and drainage board.

It has been scheduled for one of four dates on either September 23, 24, 25 or 30 but members of the Darton and Low Valley amalgamated flood action group say the meeting is during working hours and only two people are allowed to attend and represent the hundreds affected by floods in the borough.

Sue Bradshaw helped organise the August petition and is a member of the flood action group. She told the Chronicle it doesn't make sense for only two people to attend because each area was affected in a different way and could undermine their case.

The group has now contacted the council to change the date and time as well as requesting more representatives to be able to attend the meeting on behalf of all the areas badly hit by flooding.
