Lecturers to ballot for strike after sacking

OUTRAGED college lecturers are preparing a strike to show their disgust at the sacking of a senior colleague.

Almost 100 members of the University and College Union unanimously backed the proposal and a vote of no confidence in Barnsley College's three senior executives - outgoing principal Paula Whittle, vice-principal Phil Cook and head of human resources, Steve Butler.

The furore started when head of engineering and computing, Bob Willerton, was fired on Tuesday following a disciplinary hearing. The college says it was because of gross misconduct.

About 120 angry lecturers from the University and College Union staged a protest on Wednesday lunchtime demanding Mr Willerton's reinstatement. They paraded through the college and past the principal's office shouting slogans.
