Four arrested at scene of road accident

FOUR people were arrested after a crowd gathered at the scene of a collision between a police car and a red Citroen driven by an 88-year-old man. The police car, driven by a 33-year-old policewoman, was answering an emergency call on its way from Wombwell police station.

It was travelling up Church Street when it reportedly went through a red light hitting the other car travelling from Summer Lane.

A crowd of about 20 is said to have gathered outside the Royal Oak and later more police officers were called in to deal with an incident.

One eye witness said: "The collision happened at about ten past seven and a few people came out of the pub to see what had happened. The officer seemed to take a while to radio for an ambulance and people started shouting that the man was getting no help."

One man, who was arrested and charged with abusing a police officer, alleged that the police became heavy handed and were running into the crowd.

He said: "I didn't do anything wrong, they were just reacting because the accident involved the police and people were asking questions, at least four of us were charged." A police spokesman said: "I can confirm that there were several arrests made at the scene and there is an investigation into the collision.

"As to the late request for an ambulance it is the officers' discretion as to whether an ambulance is needed, if it is necessary then they will radio through for one."
