Elsecar park wins top award

ELSECAR park and nature reserve has been named one of the best green spaces in the country.

The 18.92 hectare park received a Green Flag award, the national standard for parks and green spaces, because it is 'welcoming and well maintained with the support and involvement of the local community'.

Coun Roy Miller, spokesperson for customer and neighbourhood services, said he was delighted about the award.

He added: "Barnsley council is proud to be working with the Friends of Elsecar Park in regenerating the park and following recent investment the terraced area has been restored and a new play area installed."

Staff from the park joined other winners from across the country to celebrate and collected their flags at a ceremony held in Liverpool yesterday.
