Roundabout plan for old school site

LONG-TERM and short-term plans have been outlined for the old Darton primary school site by councillors at this week's area forum meeting.

The issue was raised by a member of the public who asked about plans the council has for the former school site and whether the land is up for sale or would be in future.

Chairman Coun Roy Miller said the council had discussed the matter and has come up with proposals for what should be done with the land on the corner of Station Road and Sackup Lane.

He said: "We have plans for the site both in the short and long term and I can tell you that land is not up for sale at the moment.

"Initially, we will use the site temporarily for parking to accommodate residents having trouble finding a place to park.

"But the long term plan is to put a roundabout there to alleviate the traffic on Station Road and slow down vehicles coming from Sackup Lane and Kingsway and create another road that would lead into the new residential development at Woolley."

Built in 1910, the primary school was knocked down in June last year to make way for a new state-of-the-art building across the road and the site been vacant for months.
