'Terrified' owner's mint C5 for sale

CAR for sale: one careful lady owner, low mileage, mint condition, £1,200 . . .

If that sounds too good to be true it is — the vehicle is a Sinclair C5.

The one-seater battery-powered 'cars' were launched amid much hype in the mid-1980s and Alan's wife Gladys set her heart on one.

"She was fancying going to work on it to the magistrates' clerks' office," said Alan, 79, of Manor End, Ward Green.

Alan lovingly built the C5 when it arrived but when he took it out for a test-run he was terrified. "It was too low to the ground, a wagon would never see you. I said, 'look Glad, it's a novelty but you're not going to use it'.

"She never did so it's virtually unused. She died last year and I want to get rid of it. It was hers really but if anybody wants to pay a reasonable price I will accept it."

Alan says the C5 cost about £650 in 1985 with all the extras but an unbuilt one sold on the internet recently for £1,200.

Sadly we could not record the C5 in action . . . it's battery was flat.
