Trio move to chess final

THREE young chess masters from Penistone have made it through to the 'giga final' stage of a national chess competition.

St John's primary pupils Benn Chattaway, Connor and Michael Shiggins, won four of their six games at the 'mega final' in Sheffield. They were competing against children of all ages from South Yorkshire.

If they do the same at the giga final at Manchester University on Sunday, they will go through to the tera final, where the victor wins £2,000.

But their trainer, retired vicar Rev Matthew Joy, said they will be up against stiff competition in the next round.

He said: "I'm not being pessimistic, I'm being realistic. They will compete against teenagers as well as primary pupils. But they've got a degree of confidence and they'll give it their best."
