Cryne hands over chair

BARNSLEY FC benefactor Patrick Cryne has stepped down from his role as chairman of Barnsley Premier Leisure to concentrate on other business interests.

BPL manages the Metrodome and other leisure centres around Barnsley. Mr Cryne, who owns Oakwell jointly with the council, said yesterday: "When I took on the role, I indicted I would like to do two years in the job. I have done two and-a-half so i think it's appropriate for me to move on and do other things.

"It will give me a little more time time to spend on Barnsley FC but also more time to look at other things. I'm involved in a range of businesses.

"BPL has an outstanding management team and I feel I am leaving it in a very strong position going forward." James Starbuck, chief executive of BPL, wished him well for the future. He said: "We have spoken to Patrick at length about his decision and although we are sorry to see him go, we understand and respect his reasons for doing so."
