Three killings in one week shock towns

WOMBWELL and Darfield were rocked by two unrelated murders just two days apart last weekend. A Darfield dad who was expecting to be a father again was stabbed to death near his home in New Street on Sunday night.

Ian Stewart, 26, died from a single stab wound to the chest after an alleged incident just before 10pm.

John Doran, 31, also of New Street, is charged with murder. He appeared at Barnsley Magistrates' Court on Wednesday sporting a black eye. The Chronicle understands the two were brothers-in-law. Doran was remanded in custody by district judge Michael Rosenberg who sent the case for hearing at Sheffield Crown Court. He will make his first appearance there by video remand link on Wednesday.

Mr Stewart, a gardener, was married and had a 10-month-old daughter, Kathleen Ann Stewart. His family said in a statement through police: "Ian was a loving man and will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. As a family we are devastated at the death of Ian. For him to die so suddenly in such a tragic way has left us all shattered and unable to say a last goodbye.

"Ian was a loving husband, son, dad, dad-to-be, brother and uncle. He was a loving and caring person who was liked and respected by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never ever forgotten. "We ask that we be allowed time to grieve."

Two days earlier, on Friday, a quite Wombwell street woke to the news that bodies of two residents had been found. Devastated relatives of Gary Grinhaff cannot understand what made him apparently murder his wife and then kill himself.

Tracey Grinhaff, 42, was found dead at the couple's Aldham Crescent home and Gary, 44, was found in Wombwell Woods shortly after. The couple had two children aged 13 and three. Neighbours said they seemed a very happy couple, and Gary appeared to be a doting father.

On her Facebook web page, under 'about me', Tracey wrote: "Been married for 16 years but together for 26!!!! God that makes me sound old. currently splitting from my husband." But Gary's family had no idea the couple were having difficulties. His Dad, Arthur, said: "He came round to see me last week. Everything seemed fine. I just don't know what happened."

Last Friday a man was arrested in connection with Tracey's death but later released without charge.
