AN under-used flagship health centre at Grimethorpe could be given a boost by new doctors being brought into the area.
Health bosses will open one new practice in the North East ward and another for Cudworth and Monk Bretton by the end of next year.
The Primary Care Trust is considering all options for the exact locations of the surgeries.
New buildings are a possibility but Coun Joe Hayward thinks it would make more sense to use the multi-million pound LIFT centres.
The £7m Cudworth LIFT has yet to open but Grimethorpe's £3m LIFT has only one practice in it.
On behalf of Cudworth residents, Coun Hayward welcomed the news that more doctors would be arriving.
He added: "There is a shortage of doctors across the borough and we are hoping they will come to practice in Barnsley, it's got a good reputation and first class facilities and it might just bring them in."
Barnsley GP and chair of the professional executive committee Dr Martin Sics said improvements to GP services were being launched in places most in need of extra help and called the move a 'new beginning'.
The LIFT centres were designed to house a number of GP practices and additional health services, such as minor surgery suites.
Grimethorpe's boasts only two doctors from the same practice.
Dr Sriramulu and Dr Maters relocated from their Dobren House surgery, but the Chronicle understands that no other doctors in the area have any plans to join them.
Practices at the White Rose Medical Centre, which is being closed down by the PCT, are due to move into the Cudworth LIFT centre in August.
