Flood defence plans 'fall short of mark'

MPS have warned that not enough is being done to stop a repeat of last summer's floods and have criticised a lack of clarity over who is responsible for what.

A report by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee published on Wednesday states there was a total lack of awareness about vulnerability to flooding until it happened.

Barnsley was hit twice by the rains. Homes and businesses across the borough were evacuated as the fire service, police and council battled to bring the situation under control.

The EFRAC argues that government plans to spend £34m on flood prevention schemes across the country will fall short of the mark.
