Councillor backs plan for complex

A new residential, leisure and retail complex is set to built at Manvers. Express Park Rotherham Ltd has submitted plans to Rotherham Council for a development on 24 acres at Manvers Way, Wath-Upon-Dearne.

It will include 233 two, three and four bedroomed houses built in two and three storeys and 153 one and two bedroomed apartments which will rise to six storeys.

There will also be 25, 000 sq ft of leisure facilities and 15, 000 sq ft of food and drink premises. It is an outline planning application so exact details of the leisure and food facilities are not known at this stage but it is thought they might include a pub, business units, watersports, gym and a medical centre.

Original plans, first submitted in December 2004, included a cinema complex but it was dropped following objections from Barnsley Council. This latest proposal has been revised and updated due to known demand in the housing and leisure market after negotiations with a number of leisure operators failed to generate enough interest. Coun Alan Gosling said: "I welcome it. There's so much building going on down there it will be like a different town.

"It will tidy the area up and there are some leisure facilities which will be good for the area. It is just a pity that Barnsley Council objected to the cinema."

Contracts between Rotherham Council and Express Park Development Company to regenerate and develop the Waterfront site were exchanged in 2004.
