Student Sean wins education award

TV PRESENTER Fearne Cotton presented a Middlecliffe student with an education award and a cheque for £750 last week.

Sean Dane, 22, of Rotherham Road, beat competition from more than 250 nominees to make it to the short list for the Celebration of Learning and Skills Awards (CoLaS). Computing student Sean won in his category.

He suffers from Asperger's syndrome and completed the Skillbase programme at Dearne Valley College. He is now at Sheffield Hallam University studying for a computing degree.

He said: "My parents are so proud! I’m absolutely thrilled. I’m really enjoying my studies and I’m now even working part time as an ambassador for Sheffield Hallam University too." The award was presented during the ceremony at Harrogate International Centre on Wednesday night.

His mum, Wendy, said: "It was a really special night. It was so nice for him. It's not been given to him on a plate through, he's earned this. "He's had considerable hurdles to get over so it's a big achievement. I think it gives hope to other sufferers and other families."
