Palace visit's a family affair

A GRANDMOTHER and granddaughter could meet the Queen when they represent the Friends of Wombwell Cemetery at an evening reception at Buckingham Palace next month.

Pam Dutton, 65, and Hannah Moran, 18, both of Barlborough Road, Wombwell, are looking forward to the 'once in a lifetime' opportunity.

Hannah, an A level student a Barnsley College, said: "It's a great excuse to get a new outfit. I'm really excited about it - it's a chance of a lifetime."

Grandma Pam said: "I think it's very nice that we've got somebody so much younger involved. I don't think there are going to be that many people at the palace this time so there's a good chance of meeting the royal family."

The group was invited to a garden party at the palace in 2006 after it was awarded the Queen's Award for voluntary service. A handful of former winners have been chosen to attended the evening reception to celebrate five years of the award.

The group was founded in 2002 after an 87-year-old lady was mugged in 2002 while visiting her husband's grave.

The volunteers have worked to make the cemetery a safer place. It started the scheme to replace the iron railings around the perimeter wall.

The palace visit will take place on May 20.
