A young golfing prodigy from Birdwell has taken first place at the Young Masters Golf tournament in Northampton.

Luke Schmidt, six, played in the under-sevens category of the competition and from 45 shots he reached the eighth fairway, with his nearest competitor only reaching the seventh green.

The event, held on October 21, saw the youngster come up against three other golfers in his age group but Luke managed to hold them all off to come out on top and win.

Mum Claire, of Chilcombe Place, said: "He's always quietly confident, he takes everything in his stride.

"He's over the moon about his success."
