A new road race which replaces the Penistone Show 10k will be run for the first time this weekend.

The inaugural Penistone 10k Road Race starts at Penistone Church Football Club at 11am on Sunday.Runners will be treated to a flatter course on the new route after the show race, which has been run for 27 years, was cancelled.

Numbers are down on previous years but organiser Martyn Cartwright said he thought that was due to the race being during the summer holidays and arranged at short notice.

“I think things have gone all right but a lot of people have said they’re going to turn up on the day,” he said.

“About 100 have entered so far but we could get 130 to 140 if we have a good day.”

The race will start in the grounds of the football club and proceed up Victoria Street onto Wilson Avenue and then down Ward Street onto Green Road. On the way back, the route follows the Trans Pennine Trail, coming off the trail at Eastfield Avenue before joining Church View Road and back to the football ground.

Organisers are asking residents not to park their cars on the stretches of road being used for the race between 11am and 12 noon.Anyone wanting to watch the finish should be at the football ground by 11.30am.
