Dodge Avenger

Dodge continues to expand its range in the UK with the launch of the the Avenger, an aggressively styled four-wheel drive saloon. While some of older readers may link the name to the Hilman Avenger, let me assure you that similarities end.

Styling is a bit like a cross between the Vauxhall VXR8 and the Ford Mustang, with the striking front end and the high shoulder line the design as more than a hit of the classic Dodge Charger incorporated into it. The rear end looks much more hostile and sporty than anything in this class, which is a great USP when up against some pretty bland rivals.

Out on the road, the Avenger stays true to its American heritage. When the road is straight and the speed is up - then the Avenger feels just at home - comfortable and quiet. Once the road gets twisty however, an element of body-roll creeps in, unexpected from a car with such firm suspension set up. Steering feels precise and nicely weighted, even at low speeds and when parking.

The cabin doesn't have the premium feel of some of its competitors, but everything is laid out logically and the driver can enjoy a comfortable ride. The back however does feel a little claustrophobic, not because of the lack of space but rather because of the small windows, which have been compromised for the styling.

Power is delivered from either a 2.0 154bhp or 2.4 167bhp petrol or an extremely torquey 138bhp Diesel, which is a customer unit from Volkswagen, a significant selling point for those considering long-term reliability.

Trim comes simply in two forms SE and SXT both have generously levels of equipment for the money. I would recommend paying the premium for the SXT though as leather and other extras will only add appeal come resale time.

For those prepared to go the extra mile in styling, I would imagine that if the back windows were tinted and a suitable colour was combined with stripes across the bonnet roof and boot, the Avenger would look very much like a car costing twice the money.
