Early years remembered

ELAINE West, who lives in Middlesex, is seeking information about her childhood spent in Barnsley in the 1950s.

Her mother, Hazel Pearsall, and her aunt Joan Pearsall were born in Barnsley and lived at William Street, Worsbrough Bridge. Their parents were John and Gertrude Pearsall (nee Chappell). Hazel married Jimmy Chappell and they moved to London.

In 1952 Jimmy was made redundant following a downturn in the construction industry and due to a lack of income and a home, the couple and their children relocated to Barnsley.

Elaine, who was only three years old, can remember little of her new surroundings but she does recall attending an infant school with her older brother. However, she cannot remember the name of the school or its whereabouts.

"It had one or more fish tanks built into one of the corridors and our coat pegs had pictures instead of names."

The only accommodation the family could afford was a green double deck bus which had got stuck in the mud on a camp site and couldn't be moved. "I remember the orange box furniture and total lack of amenities.

But, on the good side, my brother and I had lots of fun spending time 'driving' the bus." Elaine's parents died young and she has not been able to obtain any information about the school or the double deck bus.

Does anyone remember attending a school in Barnsley which had the fish tanks, or can even recall the green double deck bus?

If so, Elaine would be pleased to hear about them. Contact Kath Parkin, Editorial Department, Barnsley Chronicle, 47, Church Street, Barnsley.
