Interesting picture

AN interesting photograph of the Barnsley war memorial has been loaned to us by Carol Billingham, of Higham.

It was taken at its unveiling on Sunday, October 11th 1925 in front of thousands of spectators. Towards the right is Churchfields and St Mary's Church.

What is missing, of course, is Barnsley town hall. Work on this building didn't start until several years after the unveiling.

The town hall foundation stone was laid on April 21 1932 and it was finally opened by His Royal Highness Edward, Prince of Wales, on December 14 1933.

The cost of the construction of the town hall, and its furnishings came to more than £188,037, the cost of a semi-detached house today.

It bears more than a passing resemblance to Stormont, the Parliament buildings in Northern Ireland and its facade is sculpted in Portland stone.

The war memorial sits in front of the town hall. The soldier on top looks down Regent Street, once the financial heart of the town.

The war memorial has undergone a face-lift. Carol believes the photograph belonged to her father.
