Barnsley's historic 1910 FA cup final programme found and sold for £3,000By KATH PARKIN AN FA Cup Final programme almost 100 years old featuring Barnsley and Newcastle United has sold for £3,000.
Keys Auctioneers, of Norfolk, auctioned the programme, issued by WH Smith, after it was discovered hidden inside a book. It was expected to fetch between £800 and £1,000.
When it was sold at the 1910 Final it cost a mere one penny.
Barnsley reached the final after beating Birmingham 3-0 in the semi-final. The final was held at Crystal Palace and 77,747 packed the south London ground to see an evenly fought game. Barnsley had the better of the early exchanges and after 38 minutes Lillycrop had the ball in the Newcastle net.
With only seconds left it looked as if Barnsley had triumphed, but Newcastle scored a dramatic late equaliser.
Over 20,000 Barnsley fans made the journey to Goodison Park for the replay, but the Reds did not play well and they lost by two goals from Newcastle's Shepherd.
The Barnsley team for both matches was: Jack Cooper, Dicky Downs, Harry Ness, Bob Glendenning, Tommy Boyle, George Utley, Wilf Bartrop, Ernest Gadsby, George Lillycrop, Harry Tufnell and Tom Foreman.
The Barnsley fans were disappointed, but there was a magnificent reception for the team when they arrived back home.
Two years later the team made up for the fans' disappointment by beating West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in a replay at Bramall Lane after drawing at Crystal Palace.
The programme was in excellent condition and was found inside a book published in 1906. It's believed it had stayed inside the book since the 1910 Final and the owner did not know that he had it.
The programme cover features Newcastle's Colin Veitch. It's believed it was bought by a Newcastle United fan.
A spokesman for Keys Auctioneers said: "The programme fetched well over and above what was expected. It is quite nice that it has gone back North." |
