School snap stirs the memory

"There were some really good, pleasant children who I felt fared much better as "big fish" in a small pond than they might have done floundering in the lower reaches of Barnsley Grammar School or Barnsley High School."

However, Mr Jackson emphasises that he was a "big supporter" of both the grammar and high schools, a former pupil of which he married.

He said that Longcar school had a very friendly and united staff. "There were members of staff who were excellent role models for any young teacher and I am particularly thinking of George Hunter and Mick Green, also Jim Dixon and Bill England.

"Among the younger staff I particularly remember Phil Auckland, Les Jones and Denis Ashurst who became good friends to me and Malcolm (Mack) Addy, the PE master."

Mr Jackson ran the school cricket team which won the Potter Cup in 1963. He has remembered the names of some of the players, but there are gaps and he is hoping someone can fill them in.

On the back row there is, left to right: Anthony Watson (scorer), Peter Hadfield, not known, Nigel Johnson, Graham Dutton, not known, Denis Crowcroft.

Front row, left to right: Terry Winder, not known, John Farnsworth, Terry Benton, not known, Richard Andrews.

"I wonder how many continued to be involved in club cricket? Pete Hadfield and Denis Crowcroft certainly did," said Mr Jackson.
