Trevor 'incredibly proud' of dadBy KATH PARKIN TREVOR Bateman is very proud of his dad who was so highly regarded by the people of Carlton after service in the Second World War, they presented him with an engraved wallet which his son has cherished to this day.
The inscription reads: "Presented as a token of appreciation of your services during the war 1939-1945. From the people of Carlton."
Lawrence (who was sometimes nicknamed Sam) joined the East Yorkshire Regiment at the outbreak of the war when he was 19 and was based in Doncaster.
However, he later transferred to the 78th Division of the Royal Army Corps and was sent to North Africa. He also saw service in Egypt, Sicily and Italy during which time his bravery earned him the Defence Medal, the 1939/45 Medal, the Africa Star and Italy Star.
Lawrence, who was also father to two daughters, Susan Crawshaw and Shelley Lewis, came out of the army in 1947.
When Lawrence came out of the army he followed family tradition and went to work in the pit with his brothers and father. He died in 1988.
"Although it is now 20 years since my father died, I am incredibly proud of him," said Trevor. |
