Barnsley referees remember 1964 cup final

IT was "Up for the Cup" for members of Barnsley Referees' Association and their friends when they travelled to Wembley for the 1964 FA Cup Final between West Ham and Preston North End.

One Barnsley referee, Arthur Hollland, was missing from the group when they were photographed on a visit to Gordon's Gin premises during their weekend in London.

There was a very good reason for this as the following day he was refereeing this very exciting final which ended 3-2 to West Ham.

Eric Redford, who loaned the photograph, said: "We had a great time and it was fantastic to be able to go to the match and support Arthur. It was a real honour to see someone from Barnsley doing such a splendid job."

Tomorrow, the FA Cup Final will be played between Portsmouth and Cardiff at the new Wembley Stadium. Barnsley FC almost made it to the final after two magnificent victories against Liverpool and Chelsea.

Sadly, they missed out. Turn the clock back nearly 100 years when another battling Barnsley team (then in the Second Division) reached the final of the cup against Newcastle in 1910 after beating Birmingham 3-0 in a semi-final replay.

They, also, didn't quite manage to win the cup that year but two years later, on April 24 1912, they beat West Bromwich Albion of the First Division 1-0 in the final with a goal in extra time from Harry Tuffnell in a replay at Bramall Lane to claim the biggest prize in football. Great celebrations took place outside and in the Clarence Inn, Sheffield Road, the club's headquarters. The trainer of this very successful team was retired Army sergeant William Norman who came to Barnsley from Carlisle. He left Barnsley after a couple of years for Birmingham City, but later returned here.

Susan Townend has discovered among family papers an interesting Barnsley FC booklet which reflects on the fortunes of the club up to 1910. She believes it belonged to her mother, Annie Hall, who was related to Arthur Fairclough, the club's secretary/manager at the time. The booklet reveals the vast amount of praise which was levied on the club from far and wide following their 1910 success.

This, combined with the 1912 cup win was a glorious chapter in the history of the club.
