Why Angela was known as 'Ten Pound Pom'

ANGELA Nuttall was only a child when she and her family left their roots in Barnsley to travel to the other side of the world.

They were one of the many ‘Ten Pound Pom’ families to find themselves ‘down under’ in an unfamiliar land.

Her parents took the big step to leave Yorkshire to make a better life, as others did. But for many of the children it led to confusion and not knowing exactly where they belonged.

She said: “We have spent our adult years floating like lost souls from one place to another, looking for sanctuary. Looking for somewhere to shrug off our weary sense of loss, like a dead skin.”

Sadly, her father, Barry Nuttall, died almost a year ago, leaving behind a massive gap in her life. He never wanted to return to England but he eagerly anticipated the delivery of the Barnsley Chronicle sent by relatives.

Before leaving for Australia, Angela lived at Carlton Road, Athersley. Her father worked at the former Beckett Hospital as a hospital porter and later an ambulance man. Her mother, Joan Elizabeth Nuttall (nee Brook) was born in Darton West.
