Shame at this lack of respect

Friday 18th November 2011

Wayne Johnson, White Cross Lane, Worsbrough Dale: I feel I have to write to express my shame and embarrassment for the lack of respect showed to the traders and shopping public in Barnsley Market complex last Friday.

Despite several announcements to notify the public that two minutes silence would be observed within the centre at eleven o’clock, when the solemn moment came, no announcement or signal was given, leaving traders and the public waiting for a some sort of indication that the hour had been reached.

Confusion reigned as public and traders tried to observe their own times but unfortunately the dignity of the moment had past. This situation on any Remembrance Day would be inappropriate but in light of the tragic news received here in Barnsley last week and its impact, it becomes even more unacceptable.

As a Barnsley market trader I can only offer my humble apologies to the shopping public of the town and in particular any family or friends of Private Matthew Thornton who may have witnessed this unforgivable disrespect.
