Celebrate success of youngsters

Friday 11th November 2011

In response to the very well reasoned letter from Wayne Chapman published in last week’s Chronicle in which he refers to the ‘sort of society that a significant proportion of our children live in’.

While I have to agree that too many children and families do have low aspirations, we must not forget that the majority are hard working, know where they want to go and what they must do to get there. It is easy to be negative about our community but the best of Barnsley is great!

For 26 years, I have been privileged to work with so many bright and very positive young people, who are supported by their families from across the borough.  Having been brought up in rural Dorset I feel honoured to be accepted in my adopted home town of Barnsley.

While a priority must be to work with and for the young people who are not achieving and therefore in raising standards, we must celebrate the successes of the majority who are.
