On parade: Hoylandswaine Primary pupils Max Thompson and Joseph Mosley.

Mrs E Frost, Penistone - I liked the picture of the two young lads from Hoylandswaine Primary School that you carried in last week’s Chronicle.

Your report said the school had been visited by someone from Experience Barnsley museum who had brought some objects, including an air raid siren and a lump of coal. What surprised me was the statement by a teacher that some pupils had never seen a lump of coal before.

My family was linked to mining for many years and it would be sad if its importance on this borough was lost. I hope all schools can find some time in their busy curriculum to explain about coal and the true price we paid for it.
