Let council know what matters

In the Chronicle, September 9, there were several articles again raising concerns at the loss of more public services provided by the council.

Over the last year the council has cut anything offering a service to the public apart from their own councillor numbers, or their desire to spend  public money on there own projects.

Are the cuts to local facilities like libraries, swimming pools and nursing homes done deliberately to finance their own projects, like their move to new multi-million pound offices, a broadband system and a new town centre market? In issue 12 of Open Door, their own spin booklet, an article invites the public of Barnsley to ‘Shape your services’. It starts, “Finding out what matters to you is important to us.”

Was this just another smokescreen from the council who continue to ignore the reality of public opinion? On the above invitation from the council what matters to me is the care of people when they grow too old to look after themselves, so please do not close places like Highfield Grange. Please repair and keep open the public toilet in Wombwell as I used them twice last week along with many more people.

Please keep the Gateway health centre open as this is a success and the council needs some of that. Put the new Barnsley market on hold until the country is over this financial crisis and we can afford it, remember the retail sector in England is suffering too and it may turn out to be another folly like the Civic Hall Clock. I hope people reading this will also contribute what matters to them so the council are left in no doubt as to what matters to us.
