Julie Newton: Persona Revisited

Persona Revisited is a body of photographic work by Barnsley artist, Julie Newton. It concentrates on the association between home and identity, and the role of family life formed in the context of the work.
Complex notions of the self are explored through the mother-daughter relationship.

Julie uses her camera as a tool to capture the psychological shifts and emotional transitions between mother and daughter during the onset of early adolescence, while also exploring the traumatic effects of imminent loss within the family home.

Themes of masquerade give the work a playful, yet ominous feel. Significant locations in and around the home add depth to the work and, using the distance of the camera, Julie produces evocative photographic images that confront the viewer.
