Sport to Street
They are the shoes worn by athletes as they race to the finish line, by people having a kickaround in the park and by groups of kids eager to show off the latest must-haves. ‘Sport to Street’, an exhibition from Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, follows the trainer from its inception in the mid-19th century, as a sports shoe very different to the one we know now, to the high performance footwear worn by sports stars and the sneakers riding high on a crest of fashion. By the 1970s trainers were still predominantly worn by sportsmen and women for their comfort and performance-enhancing design. This started to change however, with the craze for aerobics, health and fitness and improved trainer technology that helped to move them away from being simply practical items, to footwear that makes a fashion statement. ‘Sport to Street’ features examples from leading trainer brands including Adidas, Nike, Puma, Reebok and New Balance.
